Eastern Mountain Sports is awesome. That's all I can say.
We were looking to get into kayaking, but had limited knowledge and experience on what to look for. We went into Eastern Mountain Sports in Saratoga Springs on a whim, planning on buying used equipment to get started.
One of the employees, named Ray, spent considerable time determining our intended uses, frequency, etc., and provided a few recommendations based on our needs. At first my intention was to take this information with me and just keep an eye on Criagslist, but it didn't end there. Obviously an enthusiast, Ray went on to explain terms, how hull size and shape affect stability, tracking, swells, etc. He was able to strike the right balance of providing information and probing our knowledge without sounding condescending.
Every retailer should take a cue from EMS on how to treat their customers! Then again, maybe not. It might make the very easy decision to return to EMS for all of my sporting goods purchases a little less obvious.
Because of this level of customer service, I wanted to patronize a store that would provide this level even without the hint of a sale. We returned two days later to place our order for two kayaks they don't even normally stock. Because of Ray's service, and Brian's follow-up service on the day of the sale, I was happy to spend $3000 on the two boats and gear.
Knowledge staff that actually knows about the activities they're selling products for. They know about the brands and how they compare. After my visit looking for wool socks, I became highly informed about how the wool socks they sell have a lifetime warranty, and how to use it.
