There is nothing better than a nice summer day at the track! If you haven't done it, I would highly recommend it. I like weekdays because they are not as crowded and It's much easier to get a table at 7am and parking at 11. It's fun to place small bets on horses, even if you know nothing about horse racing. Because even those that claim to know, lose money! Small town charm at its finest, no wonder people have been doing this for generations.
We happened to be passing through Saratoga Springs last week while enjoying a week in the region exploring. We decided to drive by the Race course. We could tell it was past season but the gates were wide open so we ventured a walk through. Eventually a peace officer appeared from some where and politely asked us to leave. Too bad tours are not available to introduce people to the course. This lack of opportunity did nothing to encourage us to return.
Bring a cooler full of your canned beverages of choice, snacks or food for the day and any chairs you might need to set up your "home base" in the picnic area. Wander around the grounds and listen Reggie's Red Hot Feet Warmers lay jazz tunes and take in the sights of regal hats and boundless energy. For an additional $2 you can enter the clubhouse exchange and take in a race from the boxes.
Beautiful day here at the races. Highly recommend coming here to the races. They let you bring coolers full of whatever you want. Beer ,wine, food anything. 5 dollars to get in and the track is set up a lot like a county fair. All kinds of vendors. You name it ,it's here but I think the food and drinks are on the expensive side. But bring your own and seriously enjoy.
The Saratoga Race Course is the best 6 weeks of the Summer season if you know how to do it right. Bring in your own cooler with CANS ONLY. There's some good food at the track but it's priced as you'd expect. If you're feeling indulgent, head to the Shake Shack. There are several locations that you can post up with a picnic table but they go FAST. My advice is to get there early and head into Gate B (main gate off of Union Ave), bearing immediately right to the picnic area. Use it as a home base by dropping a table cloth on a table or planting your chairs. It's an unspoken rule that no one will move your things. Watch the horses trot in the Paddock, drink from the Big Red Spring, head to the rail for a race and watch the horses curl the course at the top of the stretch. Find Reggie and his Red Hot Feet Warmers play some tunes and explore the Grandstand walking concourse. Wear a great hat if you can and enjoy the the Saratoga Spa course.
The best event $5 can buy you for 6 weeks of the year.
